Programs

Green Hills offers pre-school and pre-kindergarten classes. School day choices are half-day mornings 9:00a.m. to noon or extended day 8:30-2:30. Our program:

• Provides age appropriate experiences for 2-5 year olds, using a rich array of stimulating materials, activities and literature.
• Promotes social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of the whole child.
• Encourages children to actively explore their environment.
• Guides each child in building self-confidence and self-control.
• Fosters meaningful partnerships with our families.
• Performs developmental tracking.
• Offers kindergarten readiness activities.

Our Environment

Our charming residential setting offers home-like surroundings in a safe, clean, spacious and well ordered learning environment. Our large outdoor play yard lends itself well to active physical play and social interactions. Our school is fully equipped with high quality equipment and materials.

Daily Activities

Classes meet 2-5 days per week, mornings or extended day. The teachers offer planned activities, as well as provide opportunities for spontaneous learning. We use thematic curriculum units selected to inspire a child's interest and curiosity.

A Typical Day

Greeting Circle: 5-10min.
Each building has a greeting circle time. The events of the day are announced and roll is taken. Children are expected to arrive by 9:00 a.m. so that they can be a part of this important daily ritual.

Open Playtime: 50-60 min.
Children are encouraged to explore the interest areas including Art/Cooking, Unit blocks, Dramatic play, Life Science Area, Sensory, Math & Manipulatives, and the Book/Story Corner.

Snack Time: 15-20 min.
Children are taught proper hand-washing techniques, sharing food together, waiting turns, learning how to pour, counting one-to-one, practicing basic table manners and having meaningful conversations.

Small Group Time: 15-30 min.
This is a teacher-directed time that includes story time, theme related activities, developmental skill tracking, pre-literacy, language arts activities, and crafts.

Outdoor Playtime: 50-60 min.
Children explore climbers, playhouses, bikes, balls, building, grass games, sand and water play, easels, drawing table, etc.

Large Group (music & movement): 15-20 min.
The children participate in singing, finger-plays, dancing, rhythm activities, movement explorations, circle games, playing musical instruments, and dramas/skits.

Daily Review Time: 5-10min.
At the end of the school day the children talk about what they did and record it on the class "white board". Children are expected to stay until the class ends at noon to participate in this daily ritual.

Extended Day Program: noon-2:30 p.m.
Children who enroll for the Extended Day Program, bring their own lunch to school, have an afternoon Open Playtime, as well as Outdoor Playtime and Storytime. No naptime is offered.
